Post Mix Concrete (Postcrete or Ready Mix) is a pre-mixed and fast setting concrete product, ideal for providing strong foundations for gate posts and fence posts without the need for measuring different materials or using a cement mixer. Post Mix is a ready-mixed blend of cement and ballast. It is usually sold in 20kg bags, so perfect for smaller jobs in the domestic garden such as fence posts, washing lines and play equipment.
What Materials are Needed to Use Post Mix?
Before getting started you need to gather the necessary materials:
- Post mix concrete
- Water
- Stick for mixing the post mix in the hole
- Spirit Level for ensuring the post is level
- Protective gear (gloves, safety glasses, etc.)

Post mix is very straightforward to use. Start by placing your fence post into the hole, then half fill the hole with water. Pour the dry post mix into the hole until it’s above the level of the water. Mix with your stick to remove any air bubbles and add more water if any dry powder is still visible. The finished level of your concrete should be approximately 50mm below ground level sloping away from the post to avoid water collecting at the base.
Adjust the position of the post using your spirit level and then allow the mix to set. The mix should set within 5-10 minutes after adding water. You should wait several hours before applying any pressure to the post. As a general rule each fence post will need between 1.5 and 2 bags of Post Mix.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Post Mix Concrete
Advantages
- Easy and convenient: Post mix comes in pre-mixed bags, making it quick and easy to use. You don’t need to worry about measuring or mixing different ingredients.
- Durable and long-lasting: Properly set post mix concrete provides a solid and stable foundation, ensuring the longevity of your outdoor structures.
- Weather-resistant: Some types of post mix concrete are formulated to withstand various weather conditions, making them suitable for both hot and cold climates.
Disadvantages
- Higher cost: Compared to traditional concrete, post mix concrete can be more expensive.
- Limited working time: Post mix sets relatively quickly, which means you need to work efficiently and quickly.
- Less flexibility: Once set, post mix cannot be easily adjusted or moved. This makes it vital to accurately position the posts during installation.
Considering the advantages and disadvantages will help you decide if post mix concrete is the right choice for your project.
Alternatives to Post Mix
If post mix is not suitable or available for your project, there are alternative options you can consider. Traditional concrete using cement, sand, and aggregate allows for more flexibility and customisation. However, it requires more time, effort, and expertise. In some cases, such as for temporary structures or small projects, using a mixture of gravel and soil can provide sufficient stability.
