Scanpole Pole+: A new long life fencing solution

Introduction

Scanpole is a family-owned company based in Finland, with a rich history dating back to 1848 starting as a small company named Burt, Boulton and Haywood. The company have stayed committed to supplying the best fencing poles throughout the years.

With a product range that includes both creosoted and pressured treated green utility poles and fencing posts, created from slow-grown Nordic Scots Pine. This exceptional timber is known for its strength and durability, making it ideal for a robust product.

With the phase-out of creosoted fencing posts, Scanpole are introducing the next generation of long-life fencing posts.

Extensive Testing by Scanpole

Scanpole Pole+ is a new copper oil treatment designed to offer the longevity of creosoted treatment. Whether you need them for fencing in agriculture or equine Scanpole Pole+ posts stand out for their strength and reliability.

For more than 10 years, Scanpole partners have conducted thorough field and laboratory tests on Pole+. These tests involved exposing the wood samples to extreme conditions, including high temperatures and humidity levels. The goal was to ensure that the new preservation agent could match—and exceed—the performance of traditional creosote. The initial results speak for themselves: Scanpole Pole+ posts boast a service life of over 40 years, comparable to that of creosote-treated products. This impressive longevity is a testament to the advanced preservation techniques used in their production.

What are the products on offer

The Pole+ range offers products in a large variety that will cater to a wide range of agricultural fencing tasks. Standard height fencing posts at 1.65m x 80mm and 1.8m x 90mm are available in this treatment for pig and sheep fencing. Taller posts are available for other fencing configurations at 2.1m, 2.4m and 2.7m at 100mm diameter. Further sizes are available in these lengths with 140mm being available at 2.1m and 2.4m and 180mm being available at 2.4m. The biggest size available is 3m x 150mm.

While Pole+ was not specifically designed for playgrounds, the BPR assessment has confirmed the safety of our products in these contexts. Rest assured, Pole+ meets all necessary safety standards, ensuring peace of mind for any application.

Tests have also indicated that horses will not crib Pole+ posts after two years of use, a common occurrence in UC4 water based green treated timber posts.

Colour variation over time

The preservative used in Pole+ timber contains high levels of copper, giving the wood a striking bright green colour. This vibrant green is noticeably brighter compared to older preservatives. This enhanced colouration is due to Pole+ products having more than double the copper content found in traditional water-based copper preservatives. When exposed to sunlight, Pole+ fencing posts will transition from a bright green to a warm, honey brown. Over time, this brown shade will gradually deepen into a natural grey, resembling the appearance of aged creosote-treated fencing.

Waste management of Pole+ products

The waste classification of Pole+ products is determined by various factors, including the preservative retention in the wood, timber density, and sapwood percentage. In many instances, wood treated with the Pole+ preservative is considered non-hazardous waste, but each case requires specific assessment.

Pole+ timber should never be used for animal litter, bedding, or as fuel for barbecues, cooking stoves, or grates. For waste timber products, reuse is preferred, or it should be disposed of at an authorized landfill.
