Rock salt is a mineral primarily composed of sodium chloride (NaCl), the same compound found in table salt. It often occurs in large deposits in underground salt mines or in evaporated salt lakes. Salt that is predominantly whiter in colour is usually sourced more from ocean and salt lakes. Brown salt is usually mined from underground deposits giving it the browner colouration.

The salt mixes with melted snow and ice on the ground. As a result, the freezing point of the saltwater solution becomes lower than that of pure water. This means that the temperature must drop even further below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) to freeze. The exact freezing point depends on the concentration of salt in the solution.
